ORTHODONTIC FIRST AID

If your teeth become sore after a visit, we generally recommend Acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (e.g. Motrin, Advil) if there are no known allergies to these medications.

If food becomes stuck between your teeth, use dental floss or proxy brush.

If a wire causes irritation, push the wire away from the area using the eraser on the end of the pencil or a cotton swab. If the wire cannot be tucked away cover the end of the wire with a small piece of wax. If those don't relieve discomfort, call the office for an appointment.

If there is an irritation inside of the mouth, a cup of warm water and teaspoon of salt can also be soothing.

If the wire has come out of the bracket or molar tube, try to reinsert the wire with a pair of needle nosed pliers or tweezers. If the wire is poking you and the wax doesn't help, the wire can be cut with a small wire cutter. Please remember to be very careful when you try to cut the wire. This is a last resort if you cannot come to the office to get repaired.

If a bracket comes loose from a tooth, it usually remains connected to the main wire. Call the office to schedule an appointment to repair the loose or broken bracket. If the expander is loose call the office immediately.
