FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is orthodontics important?
An attractive and improved self-image is just one of the benefits of orthodontic treatment. A bad bite can be detrimental to a patient's dental health by possibly causing premature wear on the teeth, asymmetrical jaw growth or difficulty in hygiene.
What is the best age to start treatment?
Orthodontic treatment can be started at any age. However, many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child see an orthodontist no later than age seven. In some cases, early treatment achieves results that are unattainable once the jaws and face have completed growing.
Am I too old for orthodontics?
Never. Many adults can experience the satisfaction of the perfect smile. Technological advances in the industry have provided excellent treatment options for adults. Ceramic and clear braces are available if desired. Also we are pleased to offer Invisalign, a "brace free" way of straightening teeth. See our Invisalign page for more information.
Will braces hurt?
Most orthodontic patients experience some discomfort the first week after the placement of the braces and sometimes right after the braces are tightened. New technology provides much gentler forces, which have greatly reduced tooth soreness. You can use Tylenol or Ibuprofen to ease the discomfort.
How long will treatment take?
The time needed to undergo orthodontic treatment will vary depending on the severity of each case as well as the cooperation of each patient. Dr. Ince will be able to determine your estimated treatment time during your initial consultation appointment with us. Once the braces are in place, routine office visits are recommended at 4-6 week intervals.
Will I still be able to play sports?
Sure. However, we recommend wearing a mouth guard for patients who are participating any contact sport. We have orthodontic mouth guards available for purchase; please ask and choose one of the exciting colors.
Will I still be able to play musical instruments?
Sure. However, there may be an initial period of adjustment. Brace covers may be used to relieve the discomfort.
Will I have to wear retainers?
Yes. Retainers are very important to maintain the new position of your teeth and you must wear your retainer as Dr. Ince instructed after the braces are taken out. We will see you on a regular basis to check your retainers and your teeth. When orthodontic treatment is complete, retainer adjustment visits are spaced further apart until finally follow up adjustments are not needed.
How much will it cost?
Cost varies depending on the type of treatment. Today many dental policies include orthodontic benefits making orthodontic fees more affordable than ever before.
